Caring for your newborns umbilical cord

Georgina Leech

Your baby’s umbilical cord is a reminder of the bond you shared during pregnancy. After birth, the cord is clamped and cut, leaving a small stump on your baby’s belly button. This stump will naturally dry out and fall off within the first 1–3 weeks, but until then, there are some things to be aware of to promote healthy healing.

How can you care for the umbilical cord stump?
1. Keep it clean

Gently clean around the base of the stump with plain water and a clean cloth or cotton swab. Avoid using alcohol or antiseptics unless specifically directed by your healthcare provider, as these can interfere with natural healing.

2. Keep it dry

Moisture can delay the drying process, so allow the stump to air-dry as much as possible. Fold the front of your baby’s nappy down to avoid covering the area, or use nappies designed with a cut-out for the umbilical cord.

3. Avoid over handling

Resist the temptation to pull or tug on the stump, even if it seems ready to fall off. Let it detach naturally to avoid irritation or infection.

4. Dress lightly

Loose-fitting clothing can help air circulate around the cord area, promoting faster drying and healing.

5. Tips for cleaning

Stick to sponge baths until the cord has fallen off and the area has healed. This prevents prolonged exposure to water, which can slow the drying process.

What’s normal?

As the cord dries, it may darken in colour, turning brown or black. A slight odour or a small amount of discharge is also common as the cord separates.

When should you seek medical advice?

Contact your healthcare provider if you notice:

  • Redness, swelling, or warmth around the cord site.

  • Foul-smelling discharge or pus.

  • Bleeding that doesn’t stop.

  • Fever or signs your baby seems unwell.

What should you do after the cord falls off?

Once the stump detaches, there may be a small raw spot or a bit of dried blood. Keep the area clean and dry, and it should heal within a few days.

Caring for your baby’s umbilical cord is a simple yet vital step in their early health. With gentle attention, the area will heal beautifully, leaving behind their tiny belly button as a symbol of their new independence.
